Fair enough the Remington rounds are fairly long (I was looking at them compared to a 30-06, and indeed the 6.5x55mm is comparable in length, albeit a wider cartridge, so you could trim that back to be shorter then the Remington rounds and have comparable powder capacity). I think this could actually work, partly by accident. The .351 Winchester round mentioned earlier in this thread was a de facto intermediate round, not due to any deliberate intent by the designers but simply because you could not have a full power cartridge in a blowback design at any reasonable we...

In fairness to Barnes, based on Nicholas Moran's book can openers, he is the primary reason the 90mm M36 made it to combat in time to be useful. He was the only one to push its development and understood you had to design these things before they were needed.
