At 25k feet you only need to worry about enemy fighters, when you strafe, anything including even rifle caliber machine guns can and will shoot at kill you. FIFY Not necessarily shoot at. In 1944/45 the German Army would stretch cables across rivers at a height calculated to catch low-flying Allied...

High speed fighters like Typhoon were difficult to handle, over powered, torque ridden aircraft designed in a rush, built by union dominated communists and newly employed farm boys or bus conductors, maintained by early 20’s pimple face boys briefly trained in sausage factory service trade schools....

At one point the official plan was 2047, and I'm thinking that we're going to end up back there. I agree; the replacement aircraft isn't due top fly until 2037 so allowing for delays, difficulties and democrats. 2040 would seem very optimistic for an IOC. I believe 2047 is still the full-service ta...

The two are not mutually exclusive of course. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if Loki was behind most of the wunderwaffe nonsense. We can almost hear him thinking "I wonder how far I can push this . . . "

Loki. "Branwen can you find me a B-29?"

Branwen. What do you want one of THEM for?"

Loki. "I'm going to smuggle it up to the Moon, reassemble it and wait until somebody finds it."

So the meme is true, when the last B-2 is taken to the boneyard, the crew will be picked up by a B-52.

And that time is not so far away . . . .

So far, the current plan is to keep the B-52s in service until 2040 although I suspect they will soldier on beyond that.

Ditching the B-2 is no surprise, since we have so few and they are massive maintenance hogs. None of the bomber options have the bomb truck abilities of the B-52, either. Also, the B-2s are wearing out fast and the B-1s have spares problems. B-1 and B-2 could haul a pretty fair bombload but the thi...

'Fake history'? :-) Thanks for clarifying - seemed a bit odd, so was curious as to what might have caused it. Nothing quite like good old fashioned imagination is there? what would we do without it? The History Channel would be completely devoid of content were it not for wild rumors and hideously ...

The feeling I got reading the data was that it was a bit like the A6M2 in concept, underpowered but very light. It would probably have given a pretty good account of itself until the next generation of fighters turned up in the mid-1930s.

While we all know that Germany was nowhere near this level of capability, did anyone ever work out what actually did happen to cause the flash? This is an old, old story (dates back around 20 years). As far as can be determined the content was invented from whole cloth and none of the claims or sta...

So what advancements in ship building (besides electronics and weapons systems) have happened in the last thirty years that a clean sheet design might use? Have they already been incorporated in the Flight III? Johnny is right; the big one is the light weight of modern gas turbines (which are mostl...

Oh very much yes. When the British were operating RAF Harriers of carriers in the Falklands, there were pages of does and don'ts intended at preventing the ship's radars tripping off things that were better not tripped off. I think the rockets carried by the Harriers was one of the key ones. The RN ...

There's an electronic problem as well. On land, MLRS/HIMARS units are very rarely in close proximity to a high-powered radar and equivalent electronic systems. On ship, they are right next to a lot of them. That means those rockets are an accident waiting to happen. One of the major problems in usin...
