If you need 98.4% efficient electric motors let me know. What's the power density? Getting the efficiency that high isn't particularly hard with a PMG, getting the whole thing light enough is rather harder and is where most of the effort is going. We can currently do that for prototypes, but really...

This isn't quite b/s, unlike the various idiotic quadcopter based proposals, but as soon as I see ducted fans I wonder why they are throwing so much efficiency away. Frustratingly I actually know the answer to that one (where I work is deeply involved in this, and for instance I've been involved in...

So basically someone wanted an article about "what happens if Pyongyang gets nuked", the editor told a journalist who has no idea on the subject to write the article so rather than spend years learning the underlying physics he went to to NukeMap and quoted the numbers from it. Given that ...

I love the classic whining at the end. "Something must be done!" We've been trying to do it since 1964. Pathetic little worms like Jon Letman have been stopping us doing it. So, when he fries, its his fault. I'd suggest just not warning people in future. Removes the risk of false alarms a...

Could you possibly do the Fairey Gannet, and do you have enough data for the Fairey Spearfish? While the Gannet was an ASW aircraft the payload and speed actually look fairly decent at first glance, so it would be interesting to see how it compares.

The shape has certainly changed - there is little or no difference at the equator but quite a lot at the poles.

Which is why tight word limits exist. Cuts down on the junk. Unfortunately it also encourages the use of very specific words which put a lot of meaning into a small number of words - but make the meaning totally opaque to a non-specialist readership. We need to have a requirement for a glossary in ...

That article is so badly garbled from the original as to be nonsensical (although to be fair the original here isn't exactly easy reading). If I've understood it correctly, however, what it's saying is that teachers who put what they're teaching into the context of the lives of their students will h...

"We have no information to suggest that anything nefarious was going to occur [b]or that these were being stored for a future act"... ATF's bureaucratic idiocy in this statement is self-evident. If it were true, why did the agency offer a $10,000 reward for information?? Read it at face v...

21st October 1941 After a very fraught joint meeting of OKW and OB West, at 4am Hitler finally agrees to a demand from von Reichnau to order a withdrawal of all forces to the Westwall, in order to free up the men of the Sixth and Eighteenth armies to try and shore up the disaster which has been unf...

My understanding is that the plan has been for some years now to retire Ocean when the new carriers become available and use them in a secondary LPH role when necessary. Given we won't have a decent Dave B force for some years you could even make the argument that we're seeing in increased capacity....

It may also be a turbo-compound engine - it fits the description, although why anybody would build one of those I have no idea - maybe the exhaust pressure is spectacularly high or something. "Intermediate air cooling" is just an intercooler - cooling the air as it leaves the turbo-/super-...

Try telling that to British journalists. It's apparently 'hugely embarrassing' for the RN. I'm waiting for the media to report her ever minor defect for the next 50 years if this is indeed a 'story'. To be fair to the journalists, the BBC at least were reporting it as "one fish-tank per...

In defense of the Armoured Flight Deck carrier: (snipped for length) It was an understandable mistake, certainly. There's a logic behind it, and I was probably a bit too harsh above. But ultimately, they fell into a hole that neither of the other carrier navies did. Maybe for good reasons, but when...
