The Navy went through all of this when they began replacing the light attack birds, and then the heavy attack birds, with F/A-18s. They added the /A to soothe the attack folk, while keeping the F to soothe the fighter jocks.
An alternative here would be to designate the airplane as the A/F-35.

All bases are covered with a choice of A/F-35 as the designator. The F-35's partisans can nickname it the Acme Fighter; the F-35 critics can nickname it the Atrocious Fighter, whatever makes them feel good.

Either way, the F-35 will be the last manned fighter airplane produced in the United States. No consensus will ever be reached as to what a follow-on 5.5 Gen or 6.0 Gen manned fighter should look like; and once cost estimates for development and acquisition of competing alternative designs became available, more likely than not, it would become abundantly clear that there wasn't enough money available in future budgets to keep F-35 production at reasonable unit costs while still allocating the financial and industrial resources needed to successfully produce a 5.5 Gen or 6.0 Gen fighter.

If the F-35 can't do everything TACAIR needs to be doing twenty years from now, alternative technical and operational strategies must be considered. These include developing an array of new standoff weaponry types; using the USAF bomber force in creative new ways; and enhancing the USN's surface combatant and submarine fleets to assume greater responsibility for offensive missions which normally might have been assigned to USAF and USN TACAIR.

The "we hate the F-35 nomatter what" crowd can make it an attack, fighter, and utility airframe. A/F/U-35.

I'm a bit confused by the difference between the P-12B and the P-12E. A small drop I could understand, but a small increase in weight shouldn't mean a 15% drop in score, particularly with the more powerful engine.

I rechecked the data and came up with a more accurate result for the P-12E that reduces its drop in rating. The main things were increased weight and shorter range resulting from the more powerful engine. That's pretty common; a larger, thirstier engine improves speed and rate of climb but penalizes range and other attributes.
