We have them for both too short and too long a time. Too short while in their prime, and too long in their old age and decline, when disease and infirmity overtakes them.

I am currently without companions, my lab having passed last February after 16 years.

My condolences.

That's always the way with animal companions. We get used to them and begin to take them for granted until before we know they are gone.

Horses are expensive to maintain. The fact that you cared for him long after his useful life, reflects well of you.

He seemed to go downhill very suddenly. He seemed to be coping with his loss of sight okay and we did not expect to have to make a decision until the summer.
However that's often the way with old horses.
