Well the Pipes & Drums of the Scots Guards just beat it in on Jools Holland’s Hootenanny. Happy New Year all, and confusion to Democrats and the French ;)

Happy New Year from Germany. And belated apologies for not joining in the Christmas wishes. I was recuperating from my stent operation, feeling sorry for myself and missing my wife who was in the hospital herself due to severe early-pregnancy nausea which induced dehydration, both of which had to be treated. All is more or less well now :)

Happy New Year and Gott Nytt År as we say in Sweden.
May the new year be happy and your wishes come true for one and all.

From here on the east coast of the USA where we are all freezing our butts off, may I wish everybody a very happy, prosperous and above all safe 2018. And be careful about driving up here, the roads are like skating rinks.

I would join in wishing a happy new year to all, but here in Omaha it's -9°F (-23°C to the rest of you) so the city decided to delay our fireworks show until it warms up (or isn't so frigid, anyway.) As we Americans cannot start a new year without fireworks, 2018 has therefore been postponed for a week.

I set off one illegal firework in honor of the new year here in Colorado. ( getting illegal fireworks is easy, it's the first exit to Wyoming and it has all the illegal fireworks you would ever need.) Freezing here as well. Happy New Year.

To celebrate the New Year, my neighbors are engaged in some of the most inept displays of counterbattery fire since 4 JULY 2016, when they used a truck as a launching platform.

And some of us are heirs of French knights, so the toasting to confusion is limited.

...A cold and quiet evening here, until of course approximately 00:01 hours, at which point the neighborhood sounded like a block party in Kabul. Shut off right quickly this year, though - sub-freezing temps will do that. In the meantime, I'm going to finish my coffee, start making the potato dumplings, and then call the Old Man, who rings in his 82nd New Year's day today.

A safe, prosperous, and happy new year to all my family and friends here, and confusion to whatever enemies lurk nearby.

Mike

Well we had two snowstorms here last month, but at the moment it's mild, with a few gaps in the cloud and actually fairly pleasant for the start of January. Despite the aforementioned skating rink roads and pavements problem after the two snowstorms this winter has actually not been a bad one at all so far.

It's 32F / 0C in Houston when I got up. Sun finally came out, so it should warm up.
