And this Google "contributor" system is pretty ridiculous in and of itself.

If it was just a message saying "oi, we'd like you to unadblock" I could live with that. (I'd probably use adblock to zap it itself and move on without irony.) But having the page go blank with a "you're using an adblocker" message, that requires allowing scripts from random-character URLs (used by Google, so much for "don't be evil") just to get to the "oi, we'd like you to unadblock" bit? When on the Internet the ads are dark and full of malware in the experience of both myself and all my friends?

No. Just no.

Works just fine for me...

Oh, it works, but if you don't have NoScript you get a popup saying "you can subscribe to not see ads".
If you do have NoScript, you get one of the "you have an adblocker, no page for you" pages unless you allow some random-crap URLs that apparently are part of Google's no-ad-subscription service.

Since I 1. don't make a habit of allowing hinky-looking URLs to run scripts in my browser and 2. take a dim view of this sort of "allow ads or else" behavior, I walked away.

I don't see either so far. It's odd, all I have is AdBlock Plus and uBlock, on Firefox.

Ah, well, uBlock was apparently updated immediately to deal with it. You only got the "nope screen" if you had a script-blocker too.

Wait. TVTropes becomes unusable, and you act like that's a bad thing? Just think, you never again will have to worry about getting sucked in to the giant sinkhole of time that is TVTropes.

The root of this is that ad click-through rates are steadily dropping, except from known click farms, where people get paid to click ads.

The problem is that nobody buys anything from those clickfarms, so the number of clicks per sale is steadily rising.

Google's solution is to force you to see ads. As if that will generate legitimate clicks, when all it will do is cut traffic to that domain to a trickle.
