I lost interest in the Thomas Covenant series after the third or fourth book (can't remember why), but it's still a pretty good series so far as I know.

30 years later he publishes a couple of novellas. I've only read the first, I'm not sure I'll even bother with the second. I think he was as bored writing it as I was reading it. The world he's invented is actually moderately interesting, but the adventure was linear and the protagonist was that most boring of creatures, a reconfigurable superhero who can deduce the answers to puzzles without bothering to explain to us how he comes to his conclusions. I see Goodreads gives it the usual 4*, I'd be more like 2*.

TC: "can't remember why..."

Drove you to play 'Leonard Cohen' album on repeat, and take 'emergency' anti-depressants ??

{ Shudder... }

I don't need anti depreesants, but yes LC is one of my favorite singers.Were they that depressing?

Yes. IIRC, Leonard Cohen was one of the 'warning flags' for potential teenage self-harm...

A few singles on play-list, that's maudlin'. Repeat of his albums, all day, every day, that's scary...

Hearing those drifting across the garden wall from neighbours' angst-stricken teen's open window, we'd count the days until her next hospital stay...

I just played the first album that came to hand, Songs... 1967 starts with Suzanne. And it has Sisters of Mercy and So long maryann. Three excellent songs. perhaps my perception is altered since I'm sat on the deck in a warm breeze, gazing out over the sunlit front paddock, filled with butterflies (good) and pollen (not so good), with birds singing in the trees, a good book in my lap, and the last of the Christmas ham and some gorgonzola and a cheap white (wine not hooker). Perfect Sunday afternoon.

LC is pretty good in my opinion.

If the youths are sitting in dark rooms with sheets on the walls listening to Joy Division then that IMHO is more serious.

But didn’t Bart Simpson once remark that making teenagers depressed was like shooting fish in a barrel?

I gave up on Thomas Covernant after the second book. The series did have potential it is just that I wanted him dead.
