Could Starfleet have had some MAD/MacNamara issues? After all, what good is a tank when everyone flies around in starships with continent leveling levels of firepower on board.

This is mitigated in some places by opponents who wish to conquer and occupy, not destroy. The thought would be during the TOS era, while they struggle with it you end up with reality pushing on you. This goes away afterwards, and so the TNG is dominated somewhat by types who don't see any utility, until new events/forces like the Dominion and Borg are encountered, forcing a revaluation.

Yeah it's something along those lines I see before me when I consider the changes between TOS and TNG and then onwards into DS9/VOY.

If you regard 'Andromeda' as ultimate extrapolation of ST arc *before* that was derailed by movie franchise, they had serious ground forces, specifically semi-autonomous killer robots, aka walking tanks. What goes around...

I knew it was marauding space Danes . . .

Presumably, the gamma, gamma, gamma was a signal for heading to Wolf 359? Or is this set later?

Before, this is in the Enterprise-C era.
So "cube" doesn't ring the same bells as it would a bit later. ;)
But there will be some more clarity along the way I hope, how it fits in with those events and so on.

To add a bit to the discussion of what type of ship the Black Prince she's technically a destroyer but a small one. In my envisioning the class was originally conceived as a cost cutting measure under the project name Light Deep Space Patrol Vessel with the intent of creating a smaller substitute - so cheaper to crew and maintain - but with similar armament and endurance to the full sized destroyers.
The Black Prince was thus the second ship in the Iron Duke-class (the class had been intended to feature historic Royal Navy names) and also the last, the compromises made were too great and only after a corrective refit was she put in active service, albeit usually with more mundane taskings than her bigger brethren.

So kinda like a Light Cruising Spacevessel (LCS) ?

That was part of the inspiration, yes. ;)

Chapter 6

Bridge, Black Prince

“Okay, just as we planned now, thrusters only!”
Wilsk didn’t really need to remind Adriana at the helm one more time, he’d been very specific on what he wanted to happen but better one time too many than one too few.
“V’lok, is it the same one?” The vulcan waited a bit longer than usual to reply.
“...yes, I believe it is. The exterior geometry is consistent with sensor analysis from our first encounter.”
Well at least there’s just one of them. So far.
“Captain, I’ve calculated the optimum location for us to be at, transferring to helm station.” Th’tavar seemed alert but calm.
In fact everyone on the bridge seemed calm and focused.
Good. Keep cool.

Wilsk just nodded and kept a close eye on the tactical display that showed the relative positions of the Black Prince, Starbase 278 and the alien vessel that they had detected on long range sensors moments earlier.
The ship slowly moved around the Starbase, with only thrusters in use it took longer than it could have, had the impulse engines been engaged.
But that would generate an energy signature that perhaps the alien ship would detect and that was something Wilsk intended to avoid.
Time for some hide and seek.

The marker for the Black Prince finally came to a rest right by the one for the Starbase. Wilsk looked up at the viewscreen, the grey hull of the base filled it completely.
“Nice flying helm. Okay V’lok, drop main power.”
Again the lights dimmed as the right buttons were pressed and red symbols appeared on some of the bridge displays. Just like the last time around.

“Anything new?” Both V’lok and Th’tavar had been silent for a bit longer than he’d like.
“Possibly. Preliminary analysis of the ship’s maneuvering suggest a greater degree of control than during the initial encounter.” V’lok stopped.
“Elaborate please Mr. V’lok.” Why do you always have to drag things out of Vulcans.
V’lok spoke only after a few seconds had passed.
“Hypothetically it could be that the conflict we believed existed between the outer hull and the absorbed cube within has been resolved. One way or another.”
Damn. There goes any hope of exploiting that.
“Th’tavar, where are we at from a tactical point?” Wilsk turned and studied the Andorian. Still calm.
“We’re holding in a stable position with the Starbase in between us and the alien vessel. There has been no indications so far that they have detected us. The vessel is decelerating at an even pace and should come to a stop off the other side of the Starbase if this continues.”
He looked a bit guilty but didn’t say anything else.

Wilsk knew he’d have looked a lot happier if he’d have had some weapons online but things were as they were.
Accept the circumstances you find yourself in and turn them into an advantage.
A teacher at the academy had told that to Wilsk once and he’d reused it as part an impromptu motivational speech he’d given to the bridge crew a short while ago. He wasn’t sure it convinced anyone but he had to at least try.

Inner core, Starbase 278

Anson looked carefully at the marks on the deck.
Blood.
Chief Nikka spoke before he’d finished his train of thought.
“It looks like they were dragged, and with some determination it would seem.”
The Sergeant looked at Nikka.
“Determination?”
“The drag marks are even, no pools of blood as if there was pauses. Just an even path all the way from emergency bulkhead and as far as we can see.”
Anson pondered that for a moment.
“They were going somewhere specific, in a hurry.”
Nikka nodded.
“Sure seems that way. But there’s something else that’s missing.”
He pointed to the walls.
“Not a phaser burn to be found. Either any fight was over so quickly that the crew couldn’t get off a shot or there was no fighting here, period.”
Interesting.

Anson looked back to where they’d come from.
“It’s the bodies that should have been in the atrium.”
Nikka nodded again.
“Someone, apparantly fairly strong, grabbed all the bodies from there. The question is why.”
“Better question is where were they taking them.” Anson looked questioning at Nikka.
“The docks are through there.” The Chief pointed in the direction of the drag marks. “The ones that have been built yet anyway.”
Anson made up his mind.
“Okay, listen up. We’ll move up two levels first to get some higher ground and then we move across to the docks. Squad one’s on point. Let’s go!”

The Macos slid into the routine again, the squads kept alternating and quickly advanced up and through the empty corridors.
The silence felt eerie to Nikka and he had to resist an impulse to speak, just for the sake of it.
Finally they came across something the Chief had been looking for and he quickly caught Anson’s attention.
“Wait!” The Sergeant gave him a brief stare before halting the advance.
“Look!” Nikka pointed to a access console on the wall.

Anson glared at it for a moment before he realized what Nikka was going on about.
It’s still online.
But then he frowned.
“It’s locked out.”
As he said that he looked at Nikka again and saw that he was holding the coffee cup in his hand.
“Time for another round of magic.”
With a grin he then tapped the console and immediately the words Master Override appeared at the top of the screen.
Nikka quickly went through the available options displayed and then looked a bit disappointed.
“Internal comms are down here as well.”
The Sergeant started to motion for the squads to get ready to move again but Nikka grabbed his arm.
“Hang on, there’s a ship.”
A ship?
“It’s in the docks. I didn’t think they were up and running yet but I guess I was wrong.”
“And?” By now Anson had figured out that with Nikka there was always an ‘and’.
“Well...for one it’s right in the direction we’re headed.” Nikka looked a bit concerned now.
“It’s M’Benga class, the Steuben.”
It took a moment for Anson to remember.
A hospital ship.

They started moving again, Nikka noticed that the Sergeant was hurrying them along now and he struggled a bit to keep up with the fit Macos.
Understandable when you’ve just found that an alien boarding party was headed straight for a more or less helpless hospital ship he supposed.

He thought a bit about what they might be moving towards. He figured that either the aliens had gotten aboard the ship and then they might as well just turn around again, even Anson probably wouldn’t consider advancing through a single flimsy airdock walkway which would connect the ship with the base.
Or the crew of the ship had managed to hold them off and then they were most likely running straight into what was probably a pretty annoyed group of aliens they knew nothing about.
Wait a minute.

A hospital ship named for von Steuben?

Drag marks? Interesting . . . .

Onward!

I lifted the hospital ship class and name from Memory Beta:
http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/M%27Benga_class
For simplicity's sake. ;)
