Roman Legion Crosses the Delaware 21 2 Iulius, 758 AUC (2 July, 5 CE), Praetorium, Castra Nova Rhenus, Germania Interior
Leticus and Acousas met with the Dictator in his office. The Dictator asked “What did the documents say?”
Leticus said “They listed all the members of the conspiracy. Next year you were to be summoned back to Rome and be tried for peculation. As well as those we know the Judge, the Assistant Corn Prefect, Sanitation Official and The Curial Censor were in their power. All of these were going to testify against you and your family. Also included was the evidence being used to keep the officials in order.”
“Then they were not willing participants?”
“No Master. The surviving officials appear to have done nothing to harm the colony. I am having them watched.”
“Good. Watch but if they are honest, hardworking and competent leave them alone”
“Uh. Master. The Judge is an incompetent lush. He does not water his wine and does not appear to know the Law. I think he was the puppet of the Law Clerk.”
I will warn Servius to watch him.”
“Leticus stay behind please.”
When Acousas left the Dictator said “Leticus, there was another reason why I freed you besides being my childhood friend. Did you ever wonder why you were taught by the same tutors that taught me?”
“I thought I was there to take punishment when you misbehaved.”
“Were you ever punished in my stead Leticus?”
“Well no. Whenever I was punished it was for what I did.”
“And I was right beside you taking the licks for my transgressions. I freed you when my Pater admitted he was your Pater. He was just as proud of you as he was of me. He just could not admit your parentage while my Mater was alive. He made me promise to protect you.”
With tears in his eyes Leticus said “He made me promise to protect you also.”
“I have been looking for the right opportunity to make this right. With the Law Clerk gone and his secretaries discredited that time is now. This says that you are of a poor branch of my family. This says that Julia is of a social climbing provincial family. This is your Marriage contract. This is your appointment to the equestrian order actually signed by Augustus himself. Make sure that properly Notarized excerpts are inserted in the Law Clerks records before Servius becomes Law Clerk. I will appoint your eldest son Assistant City Prefect. Have your second son be in charge of the team we send to the Treasurer to oversee the new tax system. Cousin we must consult with my wife for suitable Wives for your sons and Husbands for your daughters.”
3 Iulius, 758 AUC (3 July, 5 CE), Governor’s Guard Tents, Castra Nova Rhenus, Germania Interior
Nuscawaigh, while still occasionally sneezing was feeling better. His head was clearing and he no longer ached. The other inhabitants of the tent were all sneezing and could not get out of their bedrolls. Parius and Tertia were in the same shape but in the household tents. The basic difference between Nuscawaigh and the Romans was that the Romans ached all over and ran a higher fever. Nuscawaigh nursed the guards just as his mother had nursed his siblings. He made sure that they had plenty of liquids and placed wet cloth on their heads.
The Dictator postponed the planned dinner. It would be inappropriate for the betrothed to meet with Tertia in bed.
Comments and suggestions welcome.
