This scenario was setup to test the Pre-dreadnought era ships. The rule set covers a battle around the Tsushima time period (without refighting Tsushima) and before the invention of true fire control with Pollard's system and the other refinements that came with WWI. I picked the Italians and Austro-Hungarians because of the semi-historical tensions of the time that could have lead to a war prior to WWI.

The Italian plan was simple; lure the Austro-Hungarian fleet to battle to destroy it. The invasion of Adriatic islands was the catalyst. The Italian human player (the guy who made the strategic decisions about ship placement) had no imput in the computer's tactics but he was allowed to call for a retreat if he saw the situation called for it. That is what happened at the end of the scenario when he saw that Dandolo wasn't keeping the Austro-Hungarian cruisers away from the transports. The Italian player also laid the mine trap for the Austro-Hungarian scouting forces early in the game. For what it is worth the Italian player thought both fleets were total crap. He "Hates these putrid ships!" with their "Alleged armour" and "Pathetic fire factors".

The scout Magnet was destroyed by a lucky hit from one of Dandolo's 4.7" guns. There was no report on why it happened because no Austro-Hungarian ship was close enough to witness her end.

The massed torpedo attacks, from both sides, convinced me of the pathetic nature of these tin fish. A hit was likely to cause real trouble but the chances of getting said hits was small. The Italian torpedo attacks were disappointing in the extreme to the Italian player. He was hoping to bag a few more ships.

The scenario also use the optional "Bad Coordite" rule. Both sides were very vulnerable to turret hits (think British at Jutland) and destroyers with their poor defensive values tended to explode with little provocation. I am frankly surprised that more ships didn't go boom but the dice didn't roll that way.

Are there any other questions about behind the scene? It was a long time real world and I am sure that I am forgetting something.

Which mine trap? The one Szigetvár blundered into and sank, or the one where we were shooting up destroyers before finding another minefield?

Szigetvár getting sunk wasn't the one. It was when Sankt George was taken out of the fight.

Right. I assume the Italian DDs did what the Germans and Japanese always hoped to do to their enemies, and lure them onto (or through) a minefield?

How many of them did we bag, anyway?
