Kaiser Karl VI is on course 158, speed 10 knots.
Kaiser Karl VI has continued to engage the Vettor Pisani with her main and secondary batteries and scored a few hits. One hit caused an explosion in the target's aft fire control structure.
We launched torpedoes at the enemy when they came into range. We believe the enemy may have fired torpedoes at us.
Kaiser Karl VI was engaged by both enemy cruisers but not damaged.

Magnet is on course 90, speed 24 knots. She was not engaged during the last 10 minutes. Magnet sees smoke to the East. We are sure that there are multiple vessels in that smoke.

Panther is on course 158, speed 10 knots. She engaged the Carlo Alberto and missed.
Panther was not hit in the last 5 minutes.

Leopard is on course 158, speed 10 knots. She engaged Carlo Alberto and scored several hits. We noted explosions amongst the secondary batteries.
Leopard was not fired upon in the last 5 minutes.

Battle Divisions are on course 90 at 17 knots except for Ezherhog Karl.

All of our battleships took a leisurely fire practice with the enemy torpedo boats as they attempted to flee North under smoke. We can’t account for individual ship’s gunnery scores but we sank all except two of the enemy boats.
The range was so close that our 47mm guns were used.

Ezherhog Karl was struck by a torpedo in her bow. Damage is extensive and speed is limited to 10 knots. Our gunnery is unaffected and water tight integrity is uncompromised outside of the bow.

None of our other battleships were hit by torpedoes though several of them avoided torpedoes.

Zenta and 3rd Destroyer group are on course 90, speed 17 knots.
None of these vessels were damaged in the last 5 minutes.
Their fire power contributed to the destruction of the Italian Torpedo Boats in the Northern and Southern groups.

2nd Destroyer Division is on course 270. Several ships are damaged and fighting fires. None suffered damage in the last 5 minutes. These ships helped destroy the Italian Southern Torpedo Boat group.

1st Destroyer Divison has turned to course 90, speed 17 knots. None of these ships were engaged in the last 5 minutes. These ships helped destroy the Italian Southern Torpedo Boat group.

1st Torpedo Boat group is on course 315, speed 26 knots.
Hai took one small hit to the hull. There was little damage done. These ships helped destroy the Italian Southern Torpedo Boat Group.

2nd Torpedo Boat group is in scattered formation. (See map.) No ships suffered damage in the last 5 minutes. These vessels contributed to the destruction of the Southern Italian Torpedo Boat Group.
Of the enemy torpedo boats only Calliope of the Southern Group is still afloat. She appears to be sinking as well. Of the Northern Torpedo Boat Group only Albatros and Centauro were able to escape.

(Moderator’s Note: You sank 21 out of 24 Italian Torpedo Boats.)

The Partenope cruisers have turned away from our battleline. They are about 15,000 yards from our lead destroyers.

The smoke of the enemy battleline has been seen further East. We are fairly sure the enemy fleet has turned East to link up with their cruisers.

Please note that we are going to do a 15 minute General Intentions Move for the Main Battle Fleet and it's screen. The Cruiser Group will need to put in a regular 5 minute move. I will be splitting the maps and write up to reflect this.

Kaiser Karl VI go to flank speed and turn to 090. Other cruisers turn in succession to 090. Continue the gunnery engagement against their current targets with all weapons that will bear.

Great, things go well just long enough for me to think they will turn out all right, and at the last minute it blows up in my face and dashes my hopes. Typical, really. I'm afraid the crew of the Erzherzog Karl will have to content themselves with torpedo boat kills, for they will be unable to participate in the rest of the engagement.

So, the tactical situation is 9 Austrian capital ships versus 12-15 Italian capital ships, depending on whether the enemy brought their Re Umbertos to the party or not (I wouldn't bet on not). These are about the same odds the Austrians faced at Lissa, but unfortunately the Regia Marina may have improved in the meantime and I'm no Tegetthoff. Really at this point many a commander would some commanders would throw in the towel, give up, and go home to re-evaluate operational objectives. I am rather disinclined to do that after we have through all thise trouble and our objectives are right there.

Last we could see the Italians were making only 15 knots, and they had good reason to have wanted to be doing the best they could. We may have a two knot advantage here, so we can beat them to their transports and sink them. We can do that, declare victory, and skedaddle. Alternatively, I could try to leverage our small speed edge into a positional advantage and take the Italian line. Even if I can't, let's think about this more cold bloodedly. Austria-Hungary doesn't need a navy, it's nice to have it, but we don't need it. Italy does need a navy, what with being a giant peninsula sticking into the Mediterranean. If we make this a knife fight and destroy their fleet, we win, even if it destroyes our own fleet in the process.

So, with that in mind we have two courses of action available. One, we sink the transports and leave the enemy's strength afloat. Two, we play for the transports and try to get a positional advantage over the Italians. Both of these depend on us actually having that thin speed edge over the enemy. If we don't, we either retreat or I get us in close and turn this into a point blank slaughter.

What say the rest of you?

Maneuver for the transports. Force the Italian battle line and or the transport escorts to engage us. Then sink them.

I second Rob, but with the codicil that we should wax the transports if the opportunity presents itself. That IS the stated goal of the scenario, and if we're able to do that, we win according to the rules of the game. In a geopolitical framework, you're right about Italy needing a navy, and it being nice for us to have one.

We still have most of our torpedo boats, right? Even if all they have are their deck guns, that would do some unpleasant things to the transports. Once we figure out if the Italian battle line has any small ships hanging around, we can detach the torpedo boats to go wreak havoc on the transports while we deal with the battle line.

I'm up for crossing someone's "T"!
