With much fuss we are done with this turn. It took longer than expected because of a fault in computer code that this turn revealed. Thanks to the players for making this happen...

Battle Divisions are on course 0 at 17 knots.

Kaiser Karl VI is on course 135, speed 12 knots.

Kaiser Karl VI has continued to engage the Vettor Pisani with her main and secondary batteries. We scored one hit with unknown effect.
She was not engaged by the enemy in the last 5 minutes.

Magnet is on course 90, speed 24 knots. She was not engaged during the last 5 minutes. Magnet has sighted smoke to the East.

Panther is on course 135, speed 12 knots. She engaged the Carlo Alberto and hit her several times.
The target is burning.

Panther was hit by Alberto and took significant damage to her hull and stacks. Her maximum speed is 13 knots.

Leopard is on course 135, speed 12 knots. She engaged Carlo Alberto but missed.
Leopard was not fired upon in the last 5 minutes.

The enemy torpedo boats have continued northwest and are engaging our torpedo boats and destroyers. The fighting has been confused. Severe damage has been inflicted on the lead torpedo boats. Several are on fire and the Cigno exploded and sank.

Erzherhog Karl engaged the Ardea with her secondary and tertiary batteries. She scored two or more hits on the target. Areda is heavily damaged and barely moving.

Erzherhog Frederich engaged the Clio with her secondary and tertiary batteries. She scored two or more hits on the target. Clio is heavily damaged and on fire.

Zenta and 3rd Destroyer Group are on course 90, speed 20 knots.

Zenta engaged the Albatros with her main battery and scored at least two hits on the target. The Albatros was hit amidships and has slowed.

Zenta took several hits from the torpedo boats but suffered no major damage. We narrowly avoided several torpedoes. We counted at least 12 fired at us.

3rd Destroyer group is on course 270, speed 21 knots. The 3rd destroyers group is engaged with the enemy torpedo boats.

None of our destroyers were hit, though several had near misses. Our destroyers may have scored damage on the approaching torpedo boats but it is difficult to tell.

Second Destroyer Group is on course 140, speed 26 knots.

Turul engaged an enemy torpedo boat but missed. Our fire was erratic as we narrowly avoided ramming an enemy torpedo boat.
Turul was hit by several small shells and is now burning amidships.

Pandur engaged an enemy torpedo boat but missed. The enemy crossed into small arms range!
Pandur took several small hits but took no real damage.

Uskoke also engage Calypso and straddled the target.
Uskoke took a minor hit with no damage.

Scharfshutze fired upon Cassiopea but scored no hits.
Scharfshutze was fired upon but suffered no damage.

1st Destroyer group engaged the enemy torpedo boats as they moved west. We reversed course to 270 with much adverse effect on our gunnery. None of these destroyers were able to acquire a target until the very end of the last 5 minute turn. We can’t fire at the southern Italian torpedo boats for fear of hitting our own ships.

Huszar was unable to engage the enemy.
Huszar was not engaged in the last 5 minutes.

Ulan was unable to engage the enemy.
Ulan was not engaged in the last 5 minutes.

Pinguin engaged Calypso but missed.
Pinguin drew enemy fire but was not hit.

Wal engaged Calypso but missed.
Wal was not engaged in the last 5 minutes.

Seehund continued to engage Cassiopea but missed.
Seehund was not fired upon in the last 5 minutes.

Krokodil is under heavy fire from the elements in the Italian Van. She was not hit in the last 5 minutes. She is mentioned in a separate entry from 1st Torpedo Boat Group.

2nd Torpedo Boat Group turned largely to course 270, speed 26 knots.
We moved to block the enemy torpedo boats as they came west.

Our fire was concentrated on Cassiopea and Calliope. We may have scored hits on Calliope but it is difficult to discern with the volume of fire directed at these enemy vessels

Our 2nd torpedo boat group drew little fire as the enemy seems to be concentrating on our destroyers.

Krokodil is on course 315, speed 22 knots. She is being chased by several ships in the van of the Italian Battle line. She is slowing.

The enemy battle line is on course 315, speed about 15 knots. Their destroyers in the Van are doing 25-26 knots.

Magnet investigate the smoke.

Kaiser Karl VI turn to starboard and come to course 180. Panther and Leopard remain on 135. Remain at 12 knots. Continue to engage assigned targets.

I'd call the ongoing engagement the furball to end all fuballs, but the Italians destroyers haven't even joined the party yet. Extricating from this is going to be... complicated. On the plus side, it seems I mostly got the battle line out of that hammer and anvil strike, and the Italian battle line can't seem to make more than 15 knots. What this means is we've still got a chance to catch those cruisers with overwhelming force.

Orders:

-Battleship Squadron turn together 90 degrees to starboard, assuming a line ahead formation on course 090. Vigorously engage enemy torpedo units with secondary and tertiary guns. Prepare to evade incoming torpedoes.

-1st Destroyer Group continue on course and speed.

-2nd Destroyer Group advised to improve their gunnery. Turn in succession to course 315, wrapping around the back of the enemy torpedoboat line.

-3rd Destroyer Group reduce speed to 15 knots and turn 180 degrees to starboard, reversing current course to 090. Zenta move to assume position at head of 3rd Destroyer Group, making best speed to do so. All gun crews continue engaging enemy.

-1st Torpedoboat Group turn together to course 270 assuming line ahead formation. Then turn in succession to course 315.

-2nd Torpedoboat Group independent action. Detachment II try to stay together and head Eastward. Detachment I head North.

*eating popcorn while reading this*

To steal a line from a somewhat well-known Englisch writer, the excitement is killing me; I hope it will last. ;)

In that case I'll share some of my long term planning. I intend to get the battleline out of the current mess, with the torpedo units following on the flanks. Then I'll try to pound Catalfimi, Caprera, and Aretrusta with nine battleships. Hopefully, with high calibre gunfire they'll be severely damaged in just one pass. Regardless of our success in damaging the enemy light cruises, we shall then try to rescue our own cruisers from Carlo Alberto and Vettor Pisani, again relying on our superior force and the apparent inability of the Italian battleships to match our own's speed.

I don't know what we'll do from there, it's possible we shall simply await the arrival of the Italian line and let the fleet battle develop fully. Alternatively, we may instead continue East to find the enemy transports and send them to Davy Jones' locker. However, my plans have this habit of coming completely apart on contact with the enemy (and the weather), so we shall see what actually winds up happening.
