Mark Stockwell passed away on Oct. 21, 2017, in Slidell, La., only 11 days after discovering he had advanced lung cancer.

Growing up in a military family, Mark was born in North Carolina and also lived in Virginia, Ohio and Florida. He attended LSU but left college to join the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. With both a father (Marine Corps) and a grandfather (Army Air Corps/Air Force) with military careers as pilots, serving in the military was very important to Mark. His favorite assignment was as a flight navigator during his nine years of service.

After being honorably discharged, Mark moved to Pennsylvania. He joined the Corry Fire Department where he began a 21-year career that he really enjoyed and often talked about with the family. Mark retired in June of 2007 in order to relocate to Mandeville, La., to care for his aging father. Mark was an avid reader and researcher with a photographic memory. He had a vast collection of books and publications on his favorite interests of history, trains and the military, as well as his hobbies of photography and stamp collecting.

He is survived by his sister, Becky Rutkowski, of Hackettstown, New Jersey.

He will be missed.

My prayers and condolences to his family and friends. We'll see you on the other side.

M Stockwell was a real nice man, a good man, a smart man.
If we are more than the sum of our parts, then the loss of one of us is a greater blow than having lost just one person.
and that is how I feel
