I received some sad news on Friday. Bob DeSpain, one of our volunteers at Iowa, passed away. Bob was 92, and one of three remaining survivors of the USS Hoel, one of the ships sunk during the action off Samar. He would usually work a table in Iowa’s wardroom, selling copies of Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors. I have one, with his signature next to his picture in it. I made a point of helping him set up. He was a lovely man, and it was a tremendous honor to know him.

Requiescat in pace, Mr. DeSpain. My prayers and condolences to your family, friends, and shipmates.

The destroyer action off Samar is the greatest destroyer action in history, and probably the greatest there ever will be.

Wow... Simply Wow!

I would not wanted to have been on Hoel, Johnston or Samuel Roberts for all the tea in China.

RIP Sir.
