Well this is interesting (not in the good sense) but I wonder how the design process that resulted in that thing was like.

Additional mags are apparently carried on the back:

Enlarging on that a little, my understanding is that helical feed magazines are OK when handing straight-sided rounds but faced with tapered or bottleneck cartridges, they go squirrely very fast. The Russians and Chinese both tried helical magazines for submachine guns; the Russian Bizon (straight 9x18 pistol) worked quite well but the Chinese SMG (bottle-necked 7.62x25) went sour and they abandoned it for a box magazine.

Also, apparently helicals don't like rifle ammunition. All this does not auger well for Mini-Leader's bodyguards

The picture in the OP is ridiculous.

I always regret not getting a calico with the 100 round helical magazine back in the day. But they jammed like crazy as well.

...FWIW, at least one news organization mis-ID'd them as grenade launchers. :D

I see that Fox News have managed to dig up a sharp expert.
Quote:
Some of the most memorable images to emerge from North Korea’s dramatic parade featured the special operations “commandos” who were carrying what appeared to be AK-47’s with grenade-launching capabilities. There’s just one problem, Pregent said. “Where are the magazines? There's no place for the magazine to go with the mock grenade launcher in the way,” Pregent noted, calling it a “fake capability.”
