It didn't take long! We had our first spammer today, User Cameronmub. His first post was an advertisement (in Polish) for a money-lending scam. He's been kicked out and the post deleted.

Unfortunately, I think we can expect several more. A significant number of the newly-registered members have come in using Russian or Ukrainian IPs and have .ru emails that consist of a string of random letters.

That thread's electrons have been recycled, but another spamming has just shown up in the Media Centre.

It's now flagged...

I just tried it and it was OK for me.

The latest thread in 'War Against Terrorism' might just be a newbie posting in the wrong place but it's tripping several of my mental red flags...

I locked it and sent him a warning, offering to move the post if it was in the wrong place. I think it would be acceptable in the bar.

I just deleted a user trying to sell viagra in the WoT forum. Do these idiots actually make money doing this? Seems counter productive to me.

It's the same principle as phishing: you'd think by now that everyone would know "don't open an attachment in an email from a random person", but enough people will do it that it remains viable.

Or the usual Nigerian Scams....

I frankly have no idea what BruceMus may have been touting. The Cyrillic script was enough to raise concerns. Apologies to Russians who do not engage in this.

And another spam thread in the "War against Terrorism" section. This confirms it: "dispute.press" is spamming here.

Are these what the black font names are in there?

How did they get by registration and vetting?

The system was that people registered and made a single post. We'd look at that and if we approved we'd turn them into honorable members. However, the overwhelming number of people registering never made a post (in fact never came back having registered) and overwhelmingly they came from two or three IP sites in Russia.
