Will everybody please remember that ths community consists mostly of friends who have known each other a long time A very long time by Internet standards. So, please try and keep the environment here one of cordiality. That doesn't mean opinions can't be expressed strongly or forcefully but an appropriate degree of restraint is desirable. There might be flare-ups now and then to clear the air but they should be the exceptions not the rule and the administration will cool them down.

I'm sure nobody here wants this community to degenerate into the kind of sewer where obscene language and screaming personal insults substitute for discussion. There are far too many communitys like that already and I would hate to see us join their ranks. The problem is that its relatively easy to hold a level of "goodness" but very hard to stop a descent into the abyss once the slide starts. So, if we seema bit picky sometimes, our intentions are good even if they might not seem that way at the time.

Copy all, will do.

BTW, if we're talking about the Navy, should "General behavior" be replaced with "Admiral behavior?" ;)

I was going to make a quip about asking where I was on the TO in relation to this General Behavior, but I see somebody else already started down that road.

I agree, this place is way to useful to let it get mucked up with nonsense. Although, like lots of families once in while somebody throws food across the dinner table.

Doesn't "General Behavior" on this board refer to shooting somebody in the butt with a Tabasco-covered .44?

No, it means be on your best behaviour, or the General may get involved.

And everyone knows she can be a lot more dangerous than almost anyone else here.

Don't anger General Behavior.

If you do, you'll be demoted to Corporal Punishment.

Just thought I ought to bump this given how some of the threads have been going this week... Lots of people getting hot under the collar about not very much, and it's showing.

Maybe it can be handled by a change of handle.

I'm just at the point where there's enough traceback I'm not thrilled at the idea for political discussions to be out there for all to see and possibly held against us.

This should prolly be on the closed board thread.

Call me a contrarian, but I'd like to make 'em work for it if they're gonna hang me.

Seriously, though, I am a bit concerned about posted material showing up on a name search and coming back to bite people in the ass during employment and background checks. If we're going to remain public, then those of us with easily recognizable posting names should probably change them.

This is a very real, very serious and very immediate problem. A good case can be made for making everything invisible except to registered users.

I'd feel more comfortable adopting both - closing much of the board, and suggesting those who go by their real names adopt a pseudonym.

What would be involved in changing our username?

Very little - just pmail the admin and they'll do it. Good thing is - it does it retrospectively.

My personal opinion is that I don't think the board should be made private. I would never have found the board if not for the ability to search for naval fiction back in '04. I then lurked for a year and a half before I posted.

However, I agree that easily identifiable names should probably be changed to protect the guilty, even if its only "guilty by association". However, that should be up to the individual, rather than something forced upon them by the board.

I would like to point out that my real name is NOTHING like "Belushi TD", so that particular issue is moot for me.

Generally agree about keeping the board public, but since newcomers have to have the sponsorship of a current board member, this may be moot. Making the board a private club would seem to be the next logical step if the sponsorship policy remains in effect.
