Missing crew members, and I'll bet that at least one SPY-1 face is bent, if not two.

That is indeed good news.
Hopefully she'll be able to get into a drydock safely.

Some more details of the CO.

It's being unofficially reported that two berthing compartments were flooded after the collision. It's possible that's where the missing sailors are.

Aw crap. my thoughts are with the sailors.

Nevertheless, it looks a bit like USS Fitzgerald might have been a victim of a common USN misinterpretation of the Rules of the Road (The USN always has right of way). The damage is on her starboard side and she was hit by the port bow of the trader.

Rules (5), 6, 7, 8 and 15 spring to mind immediately.

Port bow has right of way over starboard bow. In any case, somebody screwed up, and it killed people.

Of course, this is only after taking a glance at the available footage, so don't take it as an insult.

As a general illustration of how the situation can be on a bridge here's a bridge audio recording from when the USS Porter collided in the Strait of Hormuz in 2012:

Here's the track of the ACX Crystal.
Some naval people here said they think it's looking weird.

Thoughts?

Without also seeing a plot of the Fitzgerald's course, it's hard to comment.

There will be a plot on the Navigator's chart table, or in CIC, but obviously they are not showing it to us yet.
